Original family collection · Printed memorial cardsThree Hawes family memorials, 1895–1900
Four photographs supplied from a family memorial booklet contain cards commemorating three people: Sophia Maria Davison Hawes, Caroline Maria Hawes and William Edward Wilson-Hawes. One of Caroline's cards was photographed twice. These original printed memorials are strong evidence for the stated death dates and burial locations; the cards are not death certificates or cemetery burial registers.
Sophia Maria Davison Hawes — 9 February 1895
In Loving Memory of
Sophia Maria Davison Hawes,
Widow of the late
William H. B. Hawes, M.R.C.S.,
Died February 9th, 1895.
Aged 75.
“Perfect through sufferings.”
The card corroborates the manuscript death-registration abstract for Sophia. Its exact printed name is Sophia Maria Davison Hawes, supporting the family's understanding that “Davison” forms part of the name used in her later life. The card does not establish whether Davison was a birth surname or a middle name.
Sophia's biography
Caroline Maria Hawes — 15 February 1896
In Loving Memory of
Caroline Maria Hawes,
Who entered into rest Feb. 15, 1896,
Aged 43.
Interred in family grave, Kensal Green Cemetery.
This is new evidence for Caroline's death and a burial location, absent from the previously supplied manuscript birth abstract. An important discrepancy must be kept visible: the birth abstract gives 16 August 1853, so she would have been 42 on 15 February 1896, whereas this memorial card gives 43. The date, reported age and identity should be checked against the GRO death index and Kensal Green burial registers rather than silently changing her birth year.

William Edward Wilson-Hawes — 23 March 1900
In Affectionate Remembrance of
William Edward Wilson-Hawes,
Who passed peacefully away, March 23rd, 1900,
Aged 55 years.
Interred in Tooting Cemetery.
The printed memorial corroborates the family tree's date of death. It also records the surname in the hyphenated form Wilson-Hawes, useful when searching for burial and probate records. His birth abstract gives 22 June 1844, consistent with his recorded age of 55 in March 1900. The card establishes a reported burial at Tooting Cemetery but does not independently verify the reported death place of Ashfield House, Feltham.

They should be added under their original image records before thumbnail links are shown as complete.
Research leads
The two named burial grounds provide specific avenues for searching burial registers and grave records. “Family grave” at Kensal Green may help identify further relatives. Cemetery records should establish whether the printed “Tooting Cemetery” denotes the municipal cemetery then in use and identify a plot or grave number.
