Research significance

The document supplies an occupational description more specific than the earlier family recollection of clerical employment. “Salesman & Staff Trainer” may reflect a particular stage of Walter’s career; it does not by itself refute the separate description “tea expert” found in the revised GEDCOM.

The regimental and pension numbers provide concrete identifiers to use when searching military service and pension records. The recorded 40% allowance should not automatically be interpreted as a disability percentage without establishing the pension scheme and date.

The crossed-out “Mary” entry is particularly intriguing because the family has identified a daughter Mary Hawes with a civil birth registration in the first quarter of 1919. The pencilled or typed date of 17 February 1919 is compatible with that quarter, but the deletion means it is not verified as her birth date.

Evidence note: The card does not visibly name Walter in the main typed fields. Its attribution to Walter comes from family provenance and a handwritten signature or annotation that appears to refer to W. J. W. Hawes; the exact handwriting should be checked against the original. It is an undated document containing amendments made over more than one period.
