Birth, marriage and death abstracts: the family of William Henry Bartleman Hawes

Four photographs of leaves from a handwritten compilation preserve transcriptions or abstracts of civil registration entries. They link surgeon William Henry Bartleman Hawes, his wife Sophia Maria Davison (formerly Day), and their children to a series of London addresses and important family dates.

Source status: The photographed document is a handwritten copy of registration particulars, not the original General Register Office certificates. It provides strong and detailed research leads, but exact spellings and dates should be checked against official register copies. Names such as “Davison” and “Day” are reproduced as written; their legal significance requires confirmation.

Family entries transcribed

William Henry Bartleman Hawes and Sophia Maria

Marriage abstract: “May 23rd” (year not legible in the supplied portion); William H. B. Hawes, bachelor, surgeon, full age; Sophia M. D. Day, spinster, full age. William's residence is given as 7 Adelphi Terrace and Sophia's as 9 St James's Street. William's father is recorded as William Hawes, Professor of Music.

The record distinguishes Sophia's surname Day from the fuller name later written as “Sophia Maria Davison Hawes formerly Day”. This helps explain why the family tree contains different variants; it does not by itself establish that Davison was a separate birth surname.

William Edward Wilson Hawes

Birth: 22 June 1844, 12 King William Street. Parents: William Henry Bartleman Hawes, surgeon, and Sophia Maria Davison Hawes, formerly Day. Birth registered 8 July [1844]. A marginal note says the name was subsequently recorded as William Edward Wilson.

Document labelled B. The subsequent-name notation is especially significant for identifying William Edward Wilson Hawes in later records.

Elizabeth Louisa Georgina Hawes, later West

Birth: 19 February 1846, 12 King William Street; father William Henry Bartleman Hawes, surgeon; mother Sophia Maria Davison Hawes, formerly Day. Registered 13 March 1846.

Marriage abstract: 14 June (year not clearly supplied); James Chaloner West, leather dresser, age 41, and Elizabeth Louisa Georgina Hawes, age 24. The father named for Elizabeth is William Henry Bartleman Hawes, surgeon.

Death: 24 May 1883, aged 37, as Elizabeth Louisa Georgina West. The entry names her as James Chaloner West's wife and records phthisis/pulmonalis (tuberculosis) as cause of death.

Document sections C, D and E. Location of death and marriage year require closer verification.

Richard Wesley Dowling Hawes

Birth: 19 February 1848, 13 Arlington Street. Parents William Henry Bartleman Hawes and Sophia Maria Davison Hawes, formerly Day; birth registered 24 March 1848.

Death: 6 October 1849, 13 Arlington Street; son of William Henry Bartleman Hawes, surgeon. Recorded cause: inflammation of the bowels, four days. His father was present at the death.

The copied death entry reads “17 months”, but the stated birth and death dates imply approximately 19½ months. This discrepancy should be checked against the original certificates.

Mary Emma Hawes

Birth: 7 November 1850, 355 Strand, St Clement Danes, daughter of William Henry Bartleman Hawes, surgeon, and Sophia Maria Davison Hawes, formerly Day. Birth registered 18 December 1850.

Death: 8 December 1893 at 119 Bedford Road, Stockwell; aged 43. The notes record influenza, phlebitis and exhaustion. Her brother, named as W. E. Wilson Hawes, was present and acted as informant; his address appears as 17 Sibella Road, Clapham.

Document sections H and I. The manuscript provides particularly useful evidence linking William Edward Wilson to his sister Mary Emma.

Caroline Maria Hawes

Birth: 16 August 1853 at 406 Strand. Parents: William Henry Bartleman Hawes, recorded as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and Sophia Maria Davison Hawes, formerly Day. Registered 27 September 1853.

Document section J. This contemporary address independently reinforces the Strand surgery association.

Sophia Maria Davison Hawes

Death: 9 February 1895 at 119 Bedford Road, Stockwell; age 75, widow of William Henry Bartleman Hawes, described as M.R.C.S. The cause is transcribed as “Epithelioma Vulva 9 years; Syncope”; registered 12 February 1895. Informant: Ellen Parkhouse, present at the death, residing at 74 Lisburn Street, Pimlico.

Document section H. The handwriting of the middle name appears “Davison” (not “Dawson”) in several entries; retain original form pending GRO verification.
