Sophia Maria Davison Hawes (formerly Day)

c. 1819–1895 · Wife of surgeon William Henry Bartleman Hawes

A family-held manuscript of registration abstracts names Sophia Maria Davison Hawes, formerly Day, as the mother of at least five Hawes children and records her death in Stockwell in 1895.

Biography

Marriage and surname

The copied marriage particulars refer to Sophia M. D. Day, spinster, and William Henry Bartleman Hawes, surgeon, marrying on 23 May, with the year not clearly visible in the surviving photograph. A later birth abstract consistently records her as Sophia Maria Davison Hawes, formerly Day. This suggests that Davison was part of her given or previous name, while Day was the maiden surname stated for registration, but that interpretation requires checking an original certificate.

Children and addresses

The handwritten abstracts name William Edward Wilson (born 1844), Elizabeth Louisa Georgina (born 1846), Richard Wesley Dowling (born 1848), Mary Emma (born 1850) and Caroline Maria (born 1853). The family occupied addresses in the Strand and adjoining London streets.

Death in Stockwell

The compilation records Sophia's death on 9 February 1895 at 119 Bedford Road, Stockwell, aged 75. She is described as the widow of William Henry Bartleman Hawes, M.R.C.S. Ellen Parkhouse was the informant. Cause of death is recorded as epithelioma of the vulva and syncope. A printed family memorial card independently confirms her date of death, age 75, and status as widow of William H. B. Hawes, M.R.C.S.
